Terms of Use

By using Manga Lore ("the App"), you agree to these terms. The App is operated by Yuki Taguchi ("we", "us").

1. What the App is

Manga Lore is an independent reference guide. It explains Japanese cultural and linguistic context behind scenes in manga and anime — honorifics, forms of address, customs, school systems, and what official translations often leave out.

The App contains no manga artwork and no reproduced dialogue. Every explanation is written by us.

2. Subscriptions

• A free tier lets you browse the full catalogue, read featured annotations, and ask a limited number of questions each month.
• A paid subscription removes the question limit and unlocks in-depth annotations.
• Payment is charged to your Apple ID at confirmation of purchase.
• Your subscription renews automatically unless you turn off auto-renewal at least 24 hours before the end of the current period.
• Your account is charged for renewal within 24 hours prior to the end of the current period.
• You can manage or cancel your subscription in your Apple ID account settings. Deleting the App does not cancel your subscription.
• If a free trial is offered, any unused portion is forfeited when you purchase a subscription.
• Refunds are handled by Apple under their standard policy. We cannot issue refunds directly.

3. Accuracy, and how we label it

We verify our explanations against primary sources where we can, and we tell you when we cannot. Every annotation carries a label:

• Established — a documented fact, supported by independent sources
• Creator-confirmed — the author or publisher has stated this
• Disputed — credible sources disagree
• Fan theory — a reading circulated by readers, not confirmed by the author
• Author's invention — presented in the work as tradition, but not an actual custom

Some annotations are marked Unverified or Researching. Those have not yet been checked by a human.

We provide the App for educational and reference purposes. Cultural practices vary by region, generation, and household. We describe tendencies, not rules that apply to every person in Japan. We do not warrant that every statement is accurate or complete, and you should not rely on the App for academic citation, legal, medical, or professional purposes without independent verification.

4. We are independent

Manga Lore is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by any manga publisher, animation studio, distributor, or creator. Series titles and character names are referenced descriptively, to identify the works being discussed. All trademarks belong to their respective owners.

Where we discuss what an official translation changed, we do so to explain the underlying Japanese, not to disparage the translator. Translation involves difficult trade-offs, and the choices we describe are usually reasonable ones.

5. Intellectual property

The explanatory text, annotations, labels, database structure, and design of the App are our property. You may quote short passages for personal, non-commercial use with attribution.

You may not:

• copy, scrape, or bulk-extract the annotation database
• redistribute, resell, or sublicense our content
• use our content to train a machine learning model without our written permission
• reverse-engineer the App except where that right cannot be excluded by law

6. Acceptable use

Do not use the App to submit unlawful content, attempt to disrupt the service, or circumvent the free-tier limits.

7. Changes to the App

We add annotations continuously and may change, add, or remove features. We may discontinue the App, in which case we will give reasonable notice and honour any prepaid subscription period or provide a pro-rata refund through Apple where possible.

8. Limitation of liability

To the maximum extent permitted by law, we are not liable for indirect, incidental, or consequential damages arising from your use of the App. Our total liability is limited to the amount you paid us in the twelve months before the claim.

Nothing in these terms limits rights you have as a consumer that cannot be limited by law. If you are in the European Union or the United Kingdom, your statutory consumer rights are unaffected.

9. Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of Japan. This does not deprive you of the protection of mandatory consumer law in your country of residence.
