Picture the original panel: “Kaito‑kun, matte.” ‑kun is a casual honorific used between equals — it signals warmth without settling who ranks above whom. English has nowhere to put it, so only the temperature of the address goes missing.

Picture a character throwing down this line. In the original, the pronoun is ore ‑ blunt, assertive, a little rough at the edges. Choose “boku” or “watashi” instead and the same declaration reads as a different person. In English, I is I, no matter which one they meant.

“Thanks, Tachibana.”

Lost in Translation

Somewhere in the story, this character is still called by their family name ‑ there’s distance left between them. Later, it shifts to a given name, and the shift itself narrates how close the two have become. In English, Tachibana reads the same before the change and after.

The characters say mechanical armour. The reading printed beside them says automail. Both sit on the page at once.

Latin script has one line. The publisher keeps the sound and lets the meaning go.

What dropped: a word that means two things at the same time. Japanese can print a reading over the characters, so a name can be foreign to the ear and plain to the eye in the same breath.

鏡花水月

A sword’s name, and a four-character idiom that predates the manga by centuries. A flower in a mirror, the moon on water: visible, ungraspable.

English edition

Kyōka Suigetsu

Romanised, it reads as invented fantasy. Nothing signals that a Japanese reader already knows the phrase.

What dropped: the fact that it is a real expression at all ‑ and that it came into Japanese from a Ming-dynasty treatise on poetry, not from Japan.

The last character is a kokuji, a character invented in Japan rather than inherited from China. It exists to mean a told story.

English edition

Akane-banashi

The syllables survive. Whether the character is Chinese or Japanese is not a question the letters can raise.

What dropped: where the character itself comes from. A reader in Japanese sees a home-made character on a manga about a home-made art form.
